Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s custody battle involving their four children has begun to heat up.  When Kim first filed for divorce early last year, both Kim and Kanye agreed that they should share joint custody of their four children.  Now, it appears the couple is a long way from agreeable terms.

It is not the first time Kanye West has taken to social media to air his grievances.  The artist often uses platforms such as Twitter and Instagram in a personal diary manner, posting entries for his millions of followers to read.  Kanye, who recently legally changed his name to Ye, shared a string of since-deleted images and messages about his fears for the safety of his daughter, North West, and allegations against Kim.  A few of the deleted messages are outlined below.

Angelina Jolie recently experienced a small victory in her contentious custody dispute with Brad Pitt. The California Court of Appeals has disqualified the private judge, John Ouderkirk, from further ruling on the matter.  Jolie and Pitt selected Judge John Ouderkirk to handle the custody dispute in the hope that a private judge would further promote the privacy of the case.  However, last year, Jolie asked Ouderkirk to disqualify himself for failing to sufficiently disclose his business relationships with Pitt’s attorneys in a timely manner.  A lower court initially ruled that Jolie’s filing seeking disqualification came too late, but Jolie’s attorneys appealed from that order.  The California Court of Appeals then ruled that Ouderkirk’s business relationships with Pitt’s attorneys raised concerns for his impartiality. In recent celebrity news, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have decided to get divorced. Undoubtedly, the couple signed a prenuptial agreement that handles much of the property division claims. But one aspect that is interesting about their eventual property settlement, is the issue of royalties. It is likely that the couple have a provision about their royalties and other intellectual property (IP) in their prenuptial agreement, but let us consider how it would play out in North Carolina if they did not. Once again, Hollywood has been hit with another devastating breakup rumor. Although not yet confirmed, many sources report that George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin are in the process of calling it quits. Many sources say that Clooney is upset because he may have to pay around $500 million to Alamuddin if they follow through with a divorce. The $500 million is essentially a distributive award since the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement before tying the knot.  Many couples in North Carolina sign prenuptial agreements before marrying to delineate how to handle specific assets should the marriage fail. If it is your intention to enter into a prenuptial or premarital agreement, you should keep the following in mind.  Continue reading →

Divorce rates in the U.S. have spiked during the coronavirus pandemic as couples find themselves together at home around the clock with nowhere to go. The added stress of unemployment, illness, and homeschooling of children has created a significant strain on relationships—especially those that are frequently under the microscope of public scrutiny. I must confess, as a family law attorney I cannot help reading about celebrity relationships. I find that even though it feels like celebrities are untouchable and have very different lives than our own when a celebrity relationship ends the same scenarios arise. Separation and divorce are the great equalizers, and no one is immune. If you have followed the recent celebrity news, you may have seen that Brad Pitt filed a motion this month asking the court in California for an emergency hearing on sealing the court file containing the details of his separation from Angelina Jolie. His argument was that he wanted to protect the couple’s six children from intense worldwide scrutiny. Continue reading →
