The Biltmore Greensboro Hotel has seen many visitors walk through its doors over the years. However, it seems like not everyone who enters leaves. Two famous ghosts still roam its halls, keeping visitors on their toes. The first spirit is a man named Phillip, an accountant who fell from a window under mysterious circumstances. Guests report hearing him pacing back and forth in room 332. The second ghost is that of Lydia, a “lady of the night” who frequented the building when it was a boarding house in the 1940s. Tragically, Lydia was pushed down the stairs and murdered, and continues to haunt the elevator and stairs where she took her final breath. It’s common for guests to leave her a gift in room 223 to try to appease her restless spirit.

One of the most well-known ghost stories in the Greensboro area is that of the vanishing hitchhiker. Drivers in the area report on rainy nights seeing a young woman soaking wet and dressed in white standing next to the old railway bridge. When they pick her up, she mysteriously vanishes from the car before they get to their destination. The story is tied to a 1920 car accident, where a woman named Lydia was killed. Whether it’s the spirit of the young woman replaying her final moments or the imagination of passersby, no one truly knows.

Winston-Salem – The Little Red Man of the Single Brothers House

The most famous ghost haunting the Winston-Salem area is that of Andreas Kremser, a shoemaker who was killed when his cellar collapsed in 1786. At the time of his death, he was wearing a red coat, and it seems his spirit wasn’t ready to move on. Residents of the building report seeing a man dressed in red throughout the building. They also hear rhythmic tapping that sounds like a hammer. Whether Kremser is dedicated to his work in the afterlife or doesn’t realize his life has ended and continues with his daily tasks is anyone’s guess. The only thing that’s for sure is that residents never know when a small man in red may be watching.
