Lunchtime hotspots for the Greensboro Courthouse

By Kristina Pisano, Blog Writer, Woodruff Family Law Group

It has been a long morning at the downtown Greensboro courthouse, and it is now time for lunch, where do you go? Want something quick, but not fast food; something healthy, but nothing that will break the bank. From established restaurants to new and trendy spots, Greensboro has some fantastic options for your lunch break that allow some downtime before you head back to the courthouse.

Just a short walk up to W. McGee St. M’Coul’s pub can transport you to Ireland in seconds. Offering one of a kind Irish dishes like shepherd’s pie and bangers & mash, they can fill you up and provide an atmosphere that is relaxing and away from the hustle and bustle at the courthouse. If the weather is nice, take advantage of their second story deck to catch some sunshine.

The new kid on the block is 1618 Downtown which is located on Elm St. Their lunch menu offers thoughtfully crafted sandwiches, personal pizzas and smaller plates to share. Their menu changes with the season, so there is always something new to try like a truffle roast beef sandwich and grilled stuff portabella “burger”. They have one of the friendliest wait staff on Elm St. and attract a classy lunch crowd looking to get away from the office for an hour or so.

If you need some spice during your lunch break, Crafted: The Art of the Taco provides the perfect venue for exciting your taste buds. Offering uniquely crafted tacos such as the fedora or the wayfarer, Crafted takes your taste buds south of the border. Be sure to order a mason jar of bacon, because when in the south, you must have bacon in a mason jar!

Pizza, of course, is always a favorite at lunch, and downtown has several options. Mellow Mushroom at the end of Elm St. offers budget-friendly lunch specials, so you don’t have to buy an entire pie. They have typical pizza options like their house special with red sauce, basil, mozzarella, and bacon. You could also step your pizza up a bit and try their bayou bleu or thai dye offering funky flavors with shrimp and Thai chili sauce.

Want to skip lunch and just treat yourself? Head to Cheesecakes by Alex and grab a slice of their famous cheesecake and a cup of delicious coffee. They serve their cheesecake by the slice and offer a broad range of flavors like crème brûlée, blueberry, raspberry and my personal favorite, chocolate peanut butter cup. They have recently remodeled and now offer more space for you to relax and check emails with their free Wi-Fi.

If you have some extra time before heading back to the courthouse, take a walk around Greensboro’s Center City Park. Just a short walk up N. Elm St. the park will help perk you up and get you ready for the afternoon. Be on the lookout for the water fountain and if it is a Friday, you might get lucky and hear some local music!

Court days can be stressful, but let the restaurants downtown take away some of that stress and fill you up with some local Greensboro goodness.
